Can you put chopping boards in the dishwasher

If you want your chopping board to last 5 to 10 years, the simple rule is: do not put wooden or bamboo chopping boards in the dishwasher, but most solid plastic cutting boards are usually fine on a standard 60°C cycle. The high heat, steam and aggressive detergents in dishwashers can warp, crack and dry out natural materials in as little as a few months.

Can you put different types of chopping board in the dishwasher?

Not all kitchen boards behave the same in a dishwasher. The right cleaning method depends on the material and thickness of the board.

Wooden chopping boards

Traditional wooden boards, such as acacia or beech, should never go in the dishwasher. The combination of hot water, steam and long cycles causes the wood fibres to swell and then shrink as they dry. After 10 to 20 washes you may see:

  • Cracks opening along the grain
  • Warping so the board rocks on your worktop
  • Raised, rough surface that is harder to clean properly

All Deer & Oak wooden boards, including our Large Acacia Board 45x35cm and Medium Acacia Board 38x28cm, are designed for hand washing only to preserve the wood for 5 to 10 years of regular use.

Bamboo chopping boards

Bamboo is a little more water resistant than many hardwoods, but it still hates dishwashers. The glue layers holding the bamboo strips together can weaken under high heat and harsh detergents. Over time this leads to:

  • Separation at the edges
  • Dark lines where water has penetrated
  • Loss of the protective oil finish

For example, our Large Bamboo Board 45x35cm (DNO-BCB-LG) and Carbonised Bamboo Board 45x35cm (DNO-CBB-LG) are both pre oiled and intended to be washed by hand in warm soapy water only.

Plastic cutting boards

Most solid plastic boards are dishwasher safe. Always check the manufacturer’s guidance, but many are rated up to 70°C. The dishwasher is actually helpful for plastic as it:

  • Removes grease more easily
  • Reaches hotter temperatures than hand washing
  • Helps reduce bacteria in deeper knife marks

If you often prepare raw chicken or mince, a dedicated dishwasher safe plastic board for raw meat plus a hand washed wooden or bamboo board for bread and vegetables is a very practical combination.

End grain and butcher’s block boards

Thick end grain butcher’s blocks are especially vulnerable in the dishwasher because they hold more water. A single 90 minute cycle can leave the block soaked through, then it dries unevenly and can split. Heavy blocks like the Deer & Oak butcher’s style boards should always be washed quickly by hand and dried upright.

How to clean chopping boards safely without a dishwasher

If your board is wood or bamboo, hand washing is not only safer, it is usually quicker too.

Step by step for wooden and bamboo boards

  1. Scrape first Use a bench scraper or the back of a knife to remove food and crumbs.
  2. Wash Use warm water around 40°C with a small amount of washing up liquid and a soft sponge or brush. Clean both sides so moisture is balanced.
  3. Rinse Rinse with clean warm water to remove all soap.
  4. Dry immediately Pat dry with a clean tea towel, then stand the board upright so air can reach both faces.

Dealing with smells and stains

  • Onions and garlic Sprinkle fine salt, rub with half a lemon, leave for 5 minutes, then rinse and dry.
  • Raw meat juices Wash promptly with hot soapy water, then wipe with a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water. Dry fully before storing.
  • Beetroot and turmeric Rinse straight away, scrub with a baking soda paste, rinse and dry in sunlight if possible.

Why Deer & Oak boards are not dishwasher safe

Deer & Oak boards are built to be solid, heavy and thick, which is ideal for stability but not for dishwashers. The very qualities that make them feel reassuring on the worktop mean they absorb and release moisture slowly.

Every board is pre treated with food safe oil so it arrives ready to use. A single dishwasher cycle can strip a large part of that finish. After 5 to 10 runs you may notice the surface going dull and rough. At that point the board is more likely to stain and can be harder to keep hygienic.

By contrast, if you hand wash and re oil every 4 to 8 weeks, a 45x35cm Deer & Oak board can stay in daily use for many years. Many customers use the same board 4 to 6 times a day and only need a light sand and re oil after several years.

Who this is for and who it is not for

Ideal for:

  • Home cooks who want a board to last 5 to 10 years and are happy to spend 30 to 60 seconds hand washing after use
  • People who like the feel of natural bamboo or acacia under the knife and want a stable 1.5 to 2.1 kg board that does not slide around
  • Hosts who use boards for serving cheese, bread and charcuterie and want them to stay good looking for guests

Not recommended for:

  • Anyone who insists every single chopping board must go in the dishwasher after each use
  • Commercial kitchens that rely on commercial dishwashers for all sanitation and cannot hand wash wooden equipment
  • People who prefer ultra light, thin plastic boards that can flex and be stacked in the dishwasher

Common problems and the right Deer & Oak solution

Matching the board to the way you cook and clean prevents most issues before they start.

  • Problem: Board smells after cutting onions or meat.
Solution: Choose a pre oiled bamboo board such as the Bamboo Double Pack and clean with hot soapy water plus a quick vinegar wipe. The oil finish helps stop odours sinking in.
  • Problem: Board slides on the worktop when chopping.
Solution: Use a heavier acacia option like the Medium Acacia Board 38x28cm. At 1.5 kg it stays put more firmly than a thin plastic mat.
  • Problem: Need one large surface for bread and carving joints.
Solution: Go for a 45x35cm board such as the Carbonised Bamboo Board. Hand wash only, but the generous size makes it easier to keep meat and trimmings contained.

FAQ

Q: Can you put chopping boards in the dishwasher if they are bamboo or wood?

A: No, bamboo and wooden chopping boards should not go in the dishwasher. High heat, steam and detergents can cause warping, cracks and loss of the protective oil finish in as few as 10 to 20 cycles. Hand washing in warm soapy water and drying upright will keep them in good condition for years.

Q: How do I make sure my wooden cutting board is hygienic without a dishwasher?

A: Wash the board straight after use with hot soapy water, then rinse and dry thoroughly. For extra peace of mind after raw meat, wipe with a vinegar and water mix or a mild food safe sanitiser, and let the board dry fully before storing. Re oil every 4 to 8 weeks so moisture and stains are less likely to soak in.

Q: What is the best type of chopping board if I always use the dishwasher?

A: If every board in your kitchen must be dishwasher safe, a solid plastic board rated for at least 60°C is usually the most practical choice. You can still keep a separate hand washed wooden or bamboo board for bread and serving if you are willing to wash just that one by hand. Deer & Oak boards themselves are not dishwasher safe.

Q: How often should I oil a Deer & Oak chopping board?

A: For daily use, oil your board roughly once a month, or whenever the surface looks dry and water stops beading on top. Use a food safe mineral oil or board conditioner, apply a thin layer over all sides, leave it to soak for at least 20 minutes, then wipe away any excess with a clean cloth.

Which Deer & Oak board should you choose?

If you are happy to hand wash and want a long lasting, knife friendly surface, a bamboo or acacia board is a very practical upgrade from thin plastic. For most home kitchens we suggest:
